Why you should still take home security seriously if you live in a safe area.

The North Hertfordshire area has a relatively low crime rate compared to the rest of the UK. In fact, the crime rate is well below average compared to both the areas around it, and similar areas in the UK. Although this is definitely something which should make us sleep easy at night, and something to be proud of, it’s important not to get complacent.

Unfortunately, crimes do still occur in North Hertfordshire, and many of those crimes are burglaries. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and make sure that your house is properly secured against any would-be burglars by investing in a few integral parts of home security. This article hopes to outline some of the ways in which you can secure your house and sleep even easier at night.

Why should you secure your house against burglars?

If burglaries are so low in North Hertfordshire, you may wonder why securing your house is such a priority. But the sad reality is that burglaries still happen. Although they may be less common than areas similar, they do still occur. It’s much better to be safe than sorry, and to prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.

The good news is that securing your house doesn’t have to be expensive either. Just taking a few steps can really help make your home more secure. Read on to find out how!

What simple steps can you take to make your house more secure?

CCTV
One of the best ways to make your house more secure is to invest in CCTV. All you’ll need is a few cameras, a TV monitor, and a video recorder. These do come at varying prices, but can be picked up fairly cheaply.

You can also get cameras which will record straight to your PC, cutting out the need for a TV monitor and recorder. CCTV is both a great deterrent, and also a way of catching any burglars in the act.

Locks
Investing in good locks is another quick and cheap way of making your house more secure. As with CCTV, locks come in many different shapes and sizes, and with vary degrees of expense. We recommend the Brisant Ultion lock for its strength and durability.

The lock you buy will depend on the type of door you have. We already have a blog on buying the best lock for your uPVC door, so take a look at that for advice. It’s also a good idea to familiarise yourself with the two standards used to rate locks in the UK: the SS312 Sold Secure Diamond rating, and the TS007:20212 British Kitemark 3 Star rating.

Burglar alarms
Finally, installing a burglar alarm is a great way of again deterring would-be burglars and also notifying people in the surrounding area that there’s been a break-in. Burglar alarms also come at varying prices, depending on their features, but, again, can be found fairly cheaply.
